Theatre designer: scenographer and costume designer
Lessons
Scenography
Costume design

"If you have any doubts whatsoever about the importance of scenography or the added value of costume design in the artistic process, picture a couple of naked actors in a black box in every stage and film performance."

As a scenographer you contribute creatively and artistically. You are involved in every aspect of the artistic end product. You design and make decisions, carrying the responsibility for creating the right atmosphere in every scene. You do this together with an art director and as part of an artistic team.

As a theatre designer at Toneelacademie you enter a varied programme of courses. Among other things, these are the focus points of what you will learn at our academy.

* This program focuses on design projects for theatre and film. You work on the basis of a variety of stage plays, scripts, etc. The aim is to develop your individuality and a new language of images.

* You work step-by-step on an idea or concept for a stage play, opera, or film script to produce a maquette; this is then actually used in a production. You are coached by a dramaturg and/or musicologist and a scenographer. A great deal of attention is paid to the presentation of your design, and we check whether you are able to put the expertise you have developed into practice.

* During the final year of the program, we closely work together with students of two divisions of Theaterschool Amsterdam: Technical Theatre Arts and Production and Stage Management. We discuss the budget for your designs, their technical implementation, and their feasibility as regards to the actual production. Your assignment includes producing technical drawings and accompanying texts about set design, construction, implementation and production planning.

These are among the courses you take
• design (main subject)
• dramaturgy
• text and image research
• painting (from observation)
• drawing (anatomy, life drawing, perspective, and technical)
• theatre, music, and opera history
• general theory of art and history of furniture
• theatre technology, lighting, and projection technology
• computer applications
• maquette construction
• preparation for the profession

Specific subjects concerning new media are constantly under development.
