Biografie

Timo Tembuyser (°1991, Aalst (BE)) is performer, zanger en componist.

Timo Tembuyser (°1991, Aalst (BE)) is a Rotterdam-based performer, singer and composer. He graduated in June 2019 at the Performance department of the Toneelacademie in Maastricht (Institute of Performative Arts) and also studied Voice at the Music Theatre department of the Conservatory in Rotterdam (Codarts University for the Arts).

Before entering the performance scene, he finished a Master’s Degree in Architecture and City Planning at the Ghent University in 2014. In these academic years, he investigated how the paradigm of theatre relates to public life in general, and to what extent a specific spatiality enriches a theatrical experience taking place there. Longing to concretize this theoretical work, he came to the Netherlands and now finds himself creating and performing within a field that might be called “music theatre-architecture”.

As a singer, he mends the EVTS-technique he is trained in with a more holistic way of approaching the voice, delving into hearing meditation and voice liberation. Singing in choirs for as long as he can remember, choir music is always at the core of his own work. Singing together is really a metaphor for human interaction : different melodies, colliding into harmony or cacophony. His works build theatrical and spatial frames for new vocal compositions.

As a performer, he enjoys exploring various forms within the music theatre landscape : from choir concerts tot physical performances, from theatre plays to installation work.

He is a member of Chamber Choir Panta Rhei (Antwerp) and Swara Vocal Ensemble (Brussels). Last season, he worked with Nicole Beutler on the new dance opera 8:METAMORPHOSIS. He also started a theatrical podcast series Requiem in majeur, together with director Naomi Steijger, in which they transform the inhabitants of an apartment building into a virtual choir, mending all their different voices into a whole. For their pilot episode 88 woningraten, they won the first prize in the NTR podcast-competition of 2018.
