In order to determine whether candidates have sufficient talent and potential for the profession, the Academy organises an obligatory selection course in spring.

The selection course consists of 4 parts and a number of assignments to be prepared at home.

Part 1
Part 2
Deel 3
Part 4

Duration
One day

Aim
Part 1 is intended to determine whether the candidate has the basic talent needed for the theatrical profession.
• a solo presentation chosen and prepared by the candidate;
• an acting lesson during which an instructor will work with the candidate on a text chosen by the candidate as the basic material;
• an acting lesson during which an instructor will work with the candidate on the basis of improvisation and exploration of elementary acting skills and understanding of what is involved;
• voice test: an investigation of the candidate’s use of his/her voice and ear for music.

Assignments to be prepared at home
The components to be prepared at home: solo presentation assignment.

Results
After completion of the first component, the candidate will receive an e-mail to say whether he/she has been admitted to part 2 of the selection course. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).

Duration
Three successive days, including two evenings

Content
Candidates admitted to part 2 must make their own choice from the options for part 2.
The possible combinations are:
• A/P: Acting/Performance
• R/P: Directing/Performance

The following components are the same for both combinations:
• a movement lesson to explore the candidate’s physical abilities;
• an improvisation workshop;
• a portfolio discussion of the candidate’s background/previous experience and passion for the theatrical profession

Candidates for the Acting program will also take part in:
• a text-based theatre workshop (assignment to prepared at home)
• a camera acting workshop.

Candidates for the Directing program will take part in a directing workshop (assignment to be prepared at home)

Candidates for the Performance program will take part in a performance workshop based on material selected and prepared by the candidate him/herself (assignment to be prepared at home).

It should be noted that the performance workshop applies to both the combination A/P and the combination D/P. For the A/P combination, the emphasis is on the candidate’s performing talents; for the D/P combination, the emphasis is more on his/her creative and staging talents.

Assignment to be prepared at home
Preparation for the workshops, depending on the selection made by the candidate.

Results

Duration
Two successive days, including one evening.

Focus
In part 3, the candidate will spend two days working intensively in workshops focusing on the program for which he/she has shown the greatest talent (based on his/her results for part 2).

For candidates for the Acting program, part 3 of the selection course consists of the following components:

Results
After completion of the third component, the candidate will receive an email notifying him/her whether he/she has been admitted to part 4 of the selection course or not. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).

Duration
One day

Interview
A personal interview during which representatives of the Academy discuss the candidate’s motivation, talents and expectations.

Part 4 is not part of the selection process. However, admission can only be finalised after the candidate has attended the interview. After part 4, the candidate’s registration will be confirmed by the Academy and by the candidate him/herself.
