The selection course consists of four parts and a number of assignments to be prepared at home.
PART 1
One day
Aim: Part 1 is intended to determine whether the candidate has the basic talent needed for the theatrical profession.
• a solo presentation chosen and prepared by the candidate;
• an acting lesson during which an instructor will work with the candidate on a text chosen by the candidate as the basic material;
• an acting lesson during which an instructor will work with the candidate on the basis of improvisation and exploration of elementary acting skills and understanding of what is involved;
• voice test: an investigation of the candidate’s use of his/her voice and ear for music.
Assignments to be prepared at home - part 1
The components to be prepared at home: solo presentation assignment.
After completion of the first component, the candidate will receive an e-mail to say whether he/she has been admitted to part 2 of the selection course. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).
PART 2
Three successive days, including two evenings
Candidates admitted to part 2 must make their own choice from the options for part 2.
The possible combinations are:
A/TP: Acting/Theatrical Performance
R/TP: Directing/Theatrical Performance
The following components are the same for both combinations:
• a movement lesson to explore the candidate’s physical abilities;
• an improvisation workshop;
• a portfolio discussion of the candidate’s background/previous experience and passion for the theatrical profession
Candidates for the Acting programme will also take part in:
• a text-based theatre workshop (assignment to prepared at home)
• a camera acting workshop.
Candidates for the Directing programme will take part in a directing workshop (assignment to be prepared at home)
Candidates for the Theatrical Performance programme will take part in a performance workshop based on material selected and prepared by the candidate him/herself (assignment to be prepared at home).
It should be noted that the performance workshop applies to both the combination A/TP and the combination D/TP. For the A/TP combination, the emphasis is on the candidate’s performing talents; for the D/TP combination, the emphasis is more on his/her creative and staging talents.
Assignment to be prepared at home - part 2
Preparation for the workshops, depending on the selection made by the candidate.
After completion of the second component, the candidate will receive an e-mail to say whether he/she has been admitted to part 3 of the selection course. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).
PART 3
Two successive days, including one evening
In part 3, the candidate will spend two days working intensively in workshops focusing on the programme for which he/she has shown the greatest talent (on the basis of his/her results for part 2).
For candidates for the Acting programme, part 3 of the selection course consists of the following components:
• an acting (text-based theatre) workshop (assignment to prepared at home)
• a camera acting workshop (assignment to be prepared at home)
• an improvisation workshop.
Candidates for the Theatrical Performance programme will take part in:
• a performance workshop using new media (assignment to be prepared at home)
• a performance workshop focusing on language and direct contact with the audience
• an improvisation workshop
Candidates for the Directing programme will take part in:
• a staging workshop (assignment to be prepared at home)
• a directing (scene directing) workshop (assignment to be prepared at home)
The aim of part 3 is to arrive at a final decision on whether the candidate can be admitted to one of the three programmes at the Maastricht Theatre Academy.
The various workshops naturally also involve a number of assignments to be prepared at home.
Assignment to be prepared at home - part 3
Preparation for the workshops, depending on the programme that the candidate wishes to take.
After completion of the third component, the candidate will receive an e-mail to say whether he/she has been admitted to part 4 of the selection course. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).
PART 4
One day
A personal interview at which representatives of the Academy discuss the candidate’s motivation, talents, and expectations.
Part 4 does not form part of the selection process. However, admission can only be finalised if the candidate has attended the interview. After part 4, the candidate’s registration will be confirmed by the Academy and by the candidate him/herself.
Candidates who have successfully completed the selection course must still register via Studielink.nl. The necessary details will be provided when the Academy confirms that the candidate has been admitted.

All candidates must speak Dutch fluently!!
• Minimum age: 17.
• Dutch secondary school diploma (at VWO, HAVO, or MBO level) or an equivalent diploma. In some cases, this requirement can be waived if the candidate has shown exceptional suitability for the subject.
• The Academy can place a maximum of 30 students for the foundation phase of the three day-time programmes (taken as a whole).
• All candidates must register for the selection course. Candidates can only be admitted after successfully completing the selection course and if they also comply with the statutory admission requirements.
Course fee
The course fee of € 149.- for participating the selection course, is to be transferred at the same time as you send in your application form.
Upon receiving your application form we will send you a reminder concerning the final payment date, after this date your application will be expired.
When your payment is received we will send you a confirmation of payment and an invitation for the selection course of your choice (provided that this day is still available), and a link for our website with a personal code to have access to the Assignments to be prepared at home for part 1, 2 and 3.
After successfully accomplish the selection course, we will send you an official confirmation that you are admitted to the Maastricht Theatre Academy. Furthermore, after receiving this confirmation you must register at Studielink.nl, we will send you the information together with your letter of admittance.
Payment
Deposit the course fee to account number 6293348 (ING-bank) of the Toneelacademie Maastricht with the notification of "selection course + the name of the applicant".
If you decide to terminate your application, your payment will not be refunded. In the event that you are not admitted to part 2, we will refund €100.-. If you are not admitted to part 3, we will refund €40.-. Part 4 of the selection course is free of charge.
Refunds will be transferred automatically in the month of May.

Admission test
In order to determine whether candidates have sufficient talent and potential for the profession, the Academy organises an admission test. The admission test takes one day. The test consists of four parts on the basis of which the Academy decides whether the candidate can be admitted.
• a portfolio of the candidate’s own work
• (no older than 3 years)
• an assignment to be prepared at home,
• a design-assignment
• an interview with the admissions committee
• the work that the candidate does during the admission test
Dates of the admission test: 5 November 2012, 29 November 2012, 12 December 2012, 31 January 2013, 21 March 2013, 24 April 2013, 23 May 2013.
The registration fee for the admission test is 25 euros.
Successful candidates will receive a statement within 2 weeks, that the additional requirements have been met (confirmation of admission). They will also receive information about registration at studielink.nl.

Admission requirements

• At the admission test, the student must have demonstrated artistic talent as shown by: expressive ability, working from observation and imagination, feeling for colour, form and material, originality, and individuality.
• Candidates must hold a Dutch “VWO” diploma, “HAVO” diploma, management training (middenkader) diploma, or specialist training (specialistenopleiding) diploma within the meaning of the Adult and Vocational Education Act (WEB) (level 4). In some cases, this requirement can be waived; candidates should contact the programme coordinator.

Academy of Fine Arts
For students who wish to take the general foundation year at the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht — with which we work closely — it is possible to carry out a 10-week theatre project in the final block as an entrance test. After passing this test your programme at the Maastricht Theatre Academy will start.
Second education
Candidates who are already taking a relevant higher education programme (Dutch “HBO”) and who wish to switch to Theatrical Design or Costume Design (zij-instromers) should contact the coordinator, Claus Stump. Other questions about these programmes should also be e-mailed to Claus Stump.

Selection course

Final results of both parts will be made public on 25 May 2012.
The selection course for the part-time programme consists of two parts and a number of assignments to be prepared at home.
PART 1
One day
• Presentation of a monologue chosen and presented by the candidate.
• An acting lesson during which an instructor will work with the candidate on a monologue by means of improvisation assignments.
• Work meeting about staging at which the candidate will work out a prepared act or scene with other candidates.
• Voice test: an investigation of the candidate’s use of his/her voice and ear for music.
Assignements to be prepared at home - part 1
The components to be prepared at home are Monologue presentation assignment and staging assignment.
After this first component, candidates will receive an e-mail to say whether they have been admitted to part 2 of the selection course. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).
PART 2
Two successive days: 1 day + evening and 1 day
• Directing assignment: The candidate will receive part of a play in advance and must prepare a directing concept. During the directing lesson, the candidate will rehearse with the actors and the scene will then be presented. Finally, there will be a follow-up discussion of the piece with the acting instructor and the theory instructor.
• Acting assignment: Rehearsal and acting of a dramatic scene based on a script chosen by the Academy and prepared in advance by the candidate at home. The instructor will cast the roles and will coach the actors.
• Movement lesson: The candidate will explore his/her physical abilities with a movement instructor.
• Voice lesson: The candidate will explore his/her vocal qualities with a voice instructor.
• Theory lesson: The candidate will be given a text to prepare thoroughly. No other preparation is required. There will then be a group discussion of the text with a theory instructor.
Assignements to be prepared at home - part 2
The components to be prepared at home: Directing assignment and acting assignment for text-based theatre. Candidates will also read a “theoretical” text.
After completion of the second component, the candidate will receive an e-mail to say whether he/she has been admitted to the part-time programme. Each candidate will receive individual oral feedback (on request).
